"You’re trying to rationalize the irrational. It isn’t just about money. It’s about status."
― Niko Bellic
Niko Bellic is the protagonist of San Andreas Connection.

Niko Bellic was born on April 29, 1978 in the Balkans, most likely the former Yugoslavia. He grew up in the harsh environment of the Yugoslav Wars and was a teenage soldier of presumably the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army or its many aligned Serbian paramilitary forces and militias. His squad was ambushed by enemy forces, and he was one of only three survivors.

Niko had trouble finding steady work after the war. Niko's Cousin, Roman, had already moved to America to start a new life in Liberty City while Niko would spend the next decade working in the European criminal underworld. Eventually after having a miscommunication with his current boss, Ray Bulgarin, Niko fled to the merchant navy to escape Bulgarin's influence.

Eventually Niko would move to Liberty City to search for the two survivors of the ambush. After finding the one behind the massacre, Niko would attempt to settle down in Liberty City. After realizing that the capitalist nature of the city, Niko and his cousin would eventually travel to Paleto Bay, San Andreas to live a quiet life.

Events of San Andreas Connection

Several months after moving to Paleto Bay with his cousin, Roman, Niko receives a strange text urging him to comply, with the threat of selling his information to the government. Under pressure and willing to take the risk for the safety of Roman, Niko heads to Los Santos to meet the unknown person.

Later found out to be Lester Crest, he takes on Niko to perform various jobs, as well as meeting Gary Mitnick, previous celebrity and big-time hacker, who now works for Lester. After a long winding road down the criminal underworld, Niko meets Alex Vogil, CEO of Spark Incorporated, and all of the strings start to come into play.

Gary, with the reluctant help of Lester, launches a heist on Weazel News, to hijack their broadcasting system for Gary's propaganda about his organization, eHero, a vigilante hacktivism group. While the heist is successful, the repercussions will be felt for many years to come.

Events of Undead Nightmare

While Undead Nightmare does take place after San Andreas Connection, it is non-canon and should not be considered part of the main story.

After the events of San Andreas Connection, Niko spends some time alone in his newly acquired office. Jaqlynn eventually notifies Niko that Alex has arrived for a visit. After some odd foreshadowing and deep conversation, Alex forcefully injects Niko with an unknown glowing liquid. Niko reacts violently, threatening to kill Alex if he ever comes back.

Several days pass and Niko sleeping in his office. He is awoke abruptly by Roman and Jaqlynn who are panicking because "the whole city has turned upside down" as Roman calls it. The night before, a zombie virus was released in various graves around the state, causing the dead to rise from their graves and attack the living, creating more undead. Niko is blamed by an unknown source as the cause of the outbreak.

Convinced that Alex is the one who pinned the outbreak on Niko, he then ventures through the undead hordes within Southern San Andreas, with the help of Gary Mitnick, to locate and bring Alex to justice. Niko learns that the liquid he was injected with days before is an experimental antidote to the zombie virus and doesn't seem to have any long term affects. After realizing Alex is innocent, Gordon kills Alex on the spot and knocks out Niko.

Niko wakes up in the Maze Bank Arena, dangling from a chain above a giant horde of zombies. He looks up at the platform only to notice Gordon talking on the phone. Niko manages to untie himself from the chain and climb to the top and confront Gordon. After a lengthy fist fight, Niko tosses Gordon off of the ledge into a horde of Zombies. Gary saves the footage to an external drive and then emails copies of the security footage to various news sources around the world to prove that Niko is innocent.

Niko receives worldwide acclaim for finding the perpetrator of the outbreak and saving dozens of survivors. Although Niko escapes the outbreak and Southern San Andreas is firebombed, Niko then later complains that he isn't feeling well and that "his belly wasn't full", signifying that the antidote no longer works and he is infected with the virus.

Niko is very protective of his family and loved ones, particularly his cousin Roman, whom Niko constantly has to worry about due to his gambling habit. Roman has an indiscreet nature of frequently getting the pair into trouble. He is withdrawn among strangers, but has good manners, and shows a softer side with love interests

That said, the horrors of war, both witnessed and perpetrated by Niko, have given him a great sense of guilt, and an ambivalence about the value of human life — he warns away pursuers and expresses regret over his past violence, but also feels that killing is all that he can do, readily taking on jobs which necessarily involve murder. Niko is prone to violence after being angered and he has an explosive temper when he is betrayed, manipulated, or his loyalty is questioned, but he is also quick to help the defenceless and unfortunate, even those he merely meets in passing; he apparently possesses a sense of idealism which was wounded by his wartime experiences. Unfortunately, such a split attitude leads to hypocrisy.

Niko's business-like manner usually leads him to behave more maturely and cautiously than his acquaintances. He has an apparent distaste for illegal drugs. He is skeptical of American mainstream culture, which he sees as "shallow" and "hypocritical" and has trouble relating to Roman's fascination with the country. However, he reasons that being in America is far better than back in Serbia due to the country's instability and misery.

Nightmare - Regret

Niko's Nightmare symbolizes Niko's regrets for his past. Seeing various dead bodies of various people, including soldiers, police officers and civilians. The corpses block any exit from an old destroyed church, eventually locking Niko inside, leaving him for dead.

At the beginning of San Andreas Connection, Niko's skills have declined a bit since his last adventure. They can be increased but start off as the following:

  • Shooting - 75%
  • Strength - 65%
  • Stealth - 50%
  • Flying - 70%
  • Driving - 90%
